In Transition...
Global Economic dynamics, Environmental implications,
and an over abundance of over marketed 'stuff' are shaking
the foundations of Western business and society - a realignment
is taking place. The 'Virtual World' of cyberspace stimulates
changes that subliminally redefine business and social behaviour,
transitioning us to a new way of life.
Cheaper and better products from the East
have already challenged Western supremacy in the Industrial
Age. But now, cheaper and better computer services from the
East are threatening the computer services industry - and
the West's superiority in the Informational Age.
Furthermore, the computer power that enabled
the Information Age is now replacing any human activity that
is predictable, repeatable and 'logical' with more reliably
and faster alternatives. The 'Knowledge Worker' - for so long
revered in society is in danger of becoming a dinosaur. In
fact, anyone who's main skill-set is 'logic' based will need
to review their approach to keep ahead of the game.
A Holistic approach to life is gaining more
credibility. Once, to explain a condition as being psych-schematic
and therefore not real, was to explain it away. But now we
recognise that it was nearer to the truth as we appreciate
the inter-dependence of our physical, mental, emotional, soul/spiritual
states. They are different facets of our one 'being' - not
separate areas that can be dealt with in isolation. One aspect
of this evolutionary development not only affects what we
think about, but how we think about it!
Whole-Brain Thinking
Before the 1950's the Right-side of the brain
was considered to be a remnant of an earlier developmental
stage and subsidiary to the crucial Left-side which was all
that we would expect the brain to be - rational, analytical
and logical. The medical research of Roger W Sperry during
the 1950's changed that perception which started a process
of realisation of the importance of the Right-sided 'creative'
non-linear approach to life from the science lab to the workplace
and common awareness. The journey has moved from 'side-to-side'
but the net conclusion is that a healthy brain is 'Whole-Brain
Thinking' - where Left 'logic' and Right 'creative' work in
harmony together to enable us to relate to the world around
us.
'Logical', systematic thinking has dominated
the business world and education, leaving the more 'creative'
Right-brain thinking neglected, under-developed and sometimes
abused. The challenge is to re-engage with our 'creativity'
and stimulate a healthy 'wholeness' to our thinking and approach
to life.
Right-sided 'creative' thinking is also very
close to spirituality and the 'higher' aspirations of the
human soul. A healthy creative life (which does not need to
be 'artistic') is a happy life that leads to wholeness in
relationships and in the workplace.
Shalomatic Wholeness
The Hebrew word for 'peace' is Shalom,
a word that is far richer in meaning than is commonly understood,
and one which better describes 'wholeness' than the term 'Holistic'.
Shalom mean - to
be at peace; welfare; good health; all is well; harmony of
relationship; reconciliation of a transaction - payment or
debt; giving satisfaction; safe; prosperity; favour; rest;
whole; finished; full; make good; restitution or repay; perform
to completion; requite; recompense; perfect;
To be 'at peace' - is the deepest desire
and need of the human heart. This is the place of most contentment,
effectiveness, and satisfaction in life where relationships
and productivity are transformed.
